Rishikesh on Your Own

What works alone, what is priced against you, and how the rafts get shared.

Rishikesh is one of the easier places in North India to arrive alone. The activities are sold per person rather than per group, the town is walkable, and a steady flow of solo travellers means nothing about turning up by yourself is unusual.

The one thing to understand is which costs are per person and which are per vehicle, because that is where travelling alone gets expensive and it is not where people expect.

What is easy alone

Rafting, because rafts are filled from whoever is booked on that slot. You join a boat with other people, which is also the fastest way to meet anybody here. Nobody books out a raft for one.

The bungee, swing, zipline and rope courses are all individual by nature and completely unaffected. So is camping — most camps sell a bed in a shared tent, and the bonfire is a communal thing by design.

What is priced against you

Anything involving a vehicle. A cab to Devprayag, Chopta or Haridwar costs the same whether one person or four are in it, which makes the day trips the one part of a solo itinerary that stings.

The fix is to ask whether anything is already running on your dates that you can join, or to build the trip around the per-person activities and leave the driving to a day when there are more of you. Tell us you are solo and we will say which of the two makes sense.

A practical note on the town

The ghats at aarti time, the Beatles Ashram, the cafes on both sides of the river and the walk across Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula are all better alone than in a group, and they fill the evenings without planning.

Rishikesh is a dry, vegetarian, early-rising sort of town. Solo evenings here are quiet by the standards of most tourist places, which suits some people exactly and others not at all.

Yes, and it is the normal way to do it solo. Rafts are filled from everyone booked on that slot, so you join a boat with other people rather than paying for one.
