When River Rafting Is Closed in Rishikesh
The monsoon shutdown, when it starts, and what to do if your dates fall inside it.

Rafting on the Ganga at Rishikesh stops every monsoon. This is not an operator preference or a weather call made on the morning — it is an administrative suspension, and when it is in force nobody is running trips, at any price, however the listing reads.
The closure is usually in place from around the end of June until the river drops in September. The exact dates move each year because they follow the water rather than the calendar, and they are announced locally rather than well in advance.
What makes the monsoon different is not rain, it is discharge. The same rapids that are a Grade III ride in October become unrunnable when the river is carrying several times the water, and the beaches used to launch and land disappear under it.
Anyone whose trip only makes sense with rafting in it and whose dates fall in July or August. We would rather tell you now than take the booking.
Quick facts
Why the dates move
Reopening depends on the river falling to a safe level and the launch and exit beaches re-emerging as the water drops. A late monsoon pushes the restart later; an early withdrawal brings it forward. Anyone who gives you a firm reopening date in May is guessing.
The same applies in reverse at the start of the closure. A heavy June can bring the suspension forward by a couple of weeks, which catches out people who booked around a date they read last year.
What still runs when the river does not
Most of what people come to Rishikesh for is not on the water. Bungee, the giant swing, zipline, the flying fox and the rope courses all operate through the monsoon, subject to the day's weather. Waterfall treks are at their best — Neer Garh is actually worth seeing when it is full rather than a trickle.
Camping continues away from the riverbank, and the town itself — the ghats, the aarti, the Beatles Ashram, the cafes — is quieter and greener than at any other time of year.
If your dates are fixed inside the closure
Tell us before you book anything. We will say plainly whether rafting is likely to be running, and if it is not, we would rather rebuild the trip around what does run than sell you a package with a rafting line in it that we expect to cancel.
If the rafting is the whole point of the trip and the dates cannot move, the honest answer is to go somewhere the season is different rather than to come here and hope.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. The monsoon suspension is normally in force through July and August and into early September. Treat any July or August rafting booking as a red flag — nobody can legitimately confirm one.
